    The first public demonstration of surgical anesthesia

    On October 16, 1846, a dentist named William Morton put a patient to sleep with ether while surgeons removed a tumor — and surgery, for the first time in human history, became painless.

    Mind and hand

    MIT is chartered

    William Barton Rogers founds a school on a radical idea: that you learn by doing. Its motto, mens et manus — mind and hand — would shape a century of invention.

    Alexander Graham Bell invents the telephone

    Working in a Boston attic, Bell transmitted the first intelligible sentence by wire to his assistant in the next room. The world has not been quiet since.

    America goes underground

    The first subway in the United States opens

    Boston dug the first subway in the Western Hemisphere beneath the Common — and invented the daily commute as we know it.

    The instant image

    Edwin Land unveils instant photography

    A walk with his daughter — who asked why she couldn't see a photo right away — sent Land back to the lab. The instant camera, born in Cambridge, made the world immediate.

    Ray Tomlinson sends the first network email

    At a Cambridge firm building the early internet, Tomlinson chose an obscure key — @ — to separate a person from their machine. Every email address since carries his decision.

    VisiCalc, the first spreadsheet, is written

    Dan Bricklin imagined a blackboard that did the arithmetic for you. VisiCalc made the personal computer worth buying — and invented the software industry's first must-have.
